Greyson stood beneath a large tree with fists balled and on his hips, neck craning upwards, skin slicked with sweat, and his chest rising and falling as if he'd just ran a mile.

Nestled in the canopy of the spring touched blossoms was an egg. A Pokémon egg, to be specific. How it'd gotten there? He couldn't explain for the life of him, nor could he even think with the symphony of buzzing, grunts, moos, and a myriad of other noises Greyson couldn't place.

Life on a farm, he supposes. When was willow atkins coming back to town again?

"Now how the hell are we going to get you down?"

He still had chores to do around the farm, after all.

Perhaps one of the best parts of rural life was the strength that could be found within a tight-knit community. While Jethro was still something of an outsider, being new to the area and prone to his bouts of introversion, he knew the importance of making himself useful to the folks he shared this little town with. So when the need was expressed for some help on a farm a couple miles over, Jethro had volunteered himself for the job. It'd be good to get off of his own parcel of land for a bit, and besides, it sounded like a matter he was particularly qualified to assist with. [break][break]

He ambled up with his farmhands in tow, approaching who he presumed was the homeowner, and watched with some amusement as the younger man stared up into a large tree, [break][break]

“Ya lose somethin' up there?” he called, more to announce his presence than anything else.

"Huh?" Greyson turns, surprised that someone had managed to sneak up on him. His muscles tense at the arrival of the man and his ranch hands, unsure of their attention.

Yet, something about the older man spoke not of violence but a reserved peace. Still, experience filled every muscle and despite his gut feeling, a piece of him stood ready.

"Uh, yeah. I think one of Willow's -- she owns the farm here -- eggs somehow ended up in the tree. There," he says pointing, "you see?"

He has to maneuver his neck a bit to keep it in sight, but confirming it was still there, he looks back at Jethro Haig.

"Any ideas Mr...?"

The older man narrowed his eyes to peer through the dark leaves of the canopy above. There, clear as day, an egg sat precariously sat between a pair of low branches. His eyebrows arched in surprise, [break][break]

“Well, ain't that odd,” he commented casually before turning back to the younger man, “But I've got some ideas.” [break][break]

But first, introductions were in order, [break][break]

“Name's Jethro; the littler one is Sugar and the other'n is Buffy.” [break][break]

The Bewear offered a shy wave to the younger man and the Snorlax stared off into space with such a lackadaisical look of repose that Jethro was sure the Pokemon hadn't heard him at all, [break][break]

“Was told ya'll needed some help over here, and this seems a good a place as any to start.”

"Jethro." Greyson echoes the name and extends a hand, forgetting for a moment almost every inch of skin was covered in sweat. "I like the names."

His attention moves from the egg, to the Rancher multiple times. He wasn't the best with small talk, even more so with an emergency situation at hand. It made him anxious.

"Well, it's fortunate to meet you. Typically I'd get my Delphox to handle to handle something like this, but, she's busy."

He leaves the explanation at that. No use embarrassing himself to a stranger and neighbor.

Then recollection strikes like a train.

"I did put out a request for some help on the farm. That's you then?"

A little sweat and grime never bothered Jethro any; he took the hand offered and replied with a firm shake of his own. But he had forgotten himself in the offering of pleasantries, it seemed. The worry etched onto the younger man's face was a reminder that he had a job to do, [break][break]

“Yessir,” he acknowledged with a nod, before turning and waving his Snorlax forward, “You mind if I take a crack at gettin' yer little'n back down?” [break][break]

He walked closer to the tree and approached the trunk with Buffy waddling up behind him. Jethro looked up again, closer and with greater scrutiny as he assessed the situation. It was hard telling if this egg was displaced by a brood parasite (Spearow in particular were prone to such tactics) or if some predatory creature had dropped a prized morsel after raiding the nearest coop. Either way, getting the egg down wouldn't be all that hard with Buffy's help; like other babies, a Pokemon's egg was more resilient than it might first appear, [break][break]

“Oh shit-” [break][break]

Perhaps it would've been more polite to wait for Greyson's reply to his offer of assistance, but Jethro suddenly noticed the egg shift in the branches that tenuously held it aloft. Eggs could be tough, but not that tough; a fall from this height was sure to break it. With a quick nod to Buffy, the Snorlax held his tremendous paws low and the ex-Ranger scrambled up, boosted by the Normal-type's incredible strength. It looked like the egg was coming down one way or another.

Greyson takes a step back to allow Jethro through. He was still working to catch his breathe and didn't want to cut his rhythm through something as simple as a 'yes'.

Small wounds -- scratches and scrapes, mostly, were still being treated by a Comfey's FLORAL HEALING, but he could still act if needed.

"Careful now. I don't think we got insurance for a fall like that here at the farm." Light humor to ease the tension.

It blows up in his face at Jethro's exclamation.

"Woah! Ellie-" The Comfey flits out from his pocket, gliding on a pocket of wind. "-Be ready to shield him or the egg in case either falls"

A last resort with no guarantee of success.

Even without the presence of the Comfey to spare him any injuries, Jethro was determined to do whatever it took to ensure the egg's safety. It wobbled again, a few feet above, and he grimaced with worry as he dragged himself up a nearby limb. Stiff joints screamed with familiar agony upon his ascent; it was a miserable reminder that Jethro was quite literally getting too old for this shit. [break][break]

But it was worth it when he was finally able to reach just a little higher and carefully grab the egg, cradling it close against his chest, [break][break]

“I got 'em!” Jethro called back. [break][break]

Now came the tricky part. He grumbled to himself as he took one cautious step down to the branch below, unable to properly see where his foot was landing past the egg clutched tight in his arms. That was probably his undoing, in hindsight, because the branch suddenly gave out beneath his weight with a sharp crack. [break][break]

Jethro yelped like a wounded Poochyena as he was plunged into free-fall.

As if The Alchemist herself was here, reality hears his call, and the worst comes to pass.

"Ells! Wait!" He turns towards a nearby Combee floating along a breeze with hapless abandon. "Help him!" It's taken off guard for but a moment, but with a flutter of his wings, a small GUST keeps Jethro afloat just long enough for a FLOWER SHIELD to appear beneath him like a platform.

Sturdy, but soft, like jumping into a meadow of flowers.

"You good up there?"

Maybe he'd died, Jethro thought, when he suddenly felt himself float light on the breeze for just a moment. Maybe he'd snapped his neck on the way down and landed himself in Elysium, his fall cushioned by a bed of asphodel. There were a lot worse ways for him to go, in the grand scheme of things. [break][break]

But as it turned out, Jethro had not actually perished on his trip down from the tree, and his fall had instead been broken by the Comfey's FLOWER SHIELD. He blinked abruptly and suddenly felt rather stupid, [break][break]

“M'fine!” he barked back, sharper than he intended. [break][break]

Jethro looked down to find the egg was still perfectly intact in his arms. He held it aloft just a little, enough to make sure the younger man could see that the little one was just fine, [break][break]

“So's yer egg.” [break][break]

With a little awkward shimmying, Jethro maneuvered himself off of the artificially created bed of flowers and presented his prize to his companion. Sugar cautiously ambled forward from her spot on the sidelines to gently pick off a couple of petals that still clung to the back of her trainer's shirt.

Had he known Jethro was going to climb the tree in the first place, he would've offered to do it on their behalf; a problem for next time, if there ever was.

"Thanks," he says with a breathy chuckle. It was equal parts nerves and relief. The medic in him superimposes itself over everything.

"Are you OK? Even a fall like that could wreck your body."

In spite of himself, Jethro found himself laughing hoarsely at the other man's concern, [break][break]

“Yessir,” he replied easily as he handed over the egg, “Believe you me, I been hurt worse doin' dumber shit.” [break][break]

Something that came with the territory of both rural life and his former career as a Ranger. A short fall onto such a comfortable bed of flowers was nothing compared to tasks like wrangling an ornery Tauros or rescuing an injured Ursaring. [break][break]

Jethro smiled a little in spite of himself and tipped his hat, [break][break]

“Looks like that's the first'a yer chores done; what else can I do ya for?” [break][break]

There was still plenty of daylight and a lot of acreage to cover; if Willow and her farmhand still had work left to be done, Jethro had ample time to assist in whatever way he could.
